- Colors
- Black nose and dark purple tongue: Cream, Apricot, Fawn, Fawn with Black Mask, Red Fawn,
Red Fawn with Black Mask, Red, Red with Black Mask, Dark Chocolate, Black, and Sable.
- Dilute
- Liver, pink or gray colored nose and a lavender tongue: Cream, Apricot, Five-Point Red,
Dilute Chocolate, Lilac (warm gray), and Blue (steel gray).
- Flowered (spotted)
- A solid colored head with spots or ticking on the body. Flowered can occur in any color.
Flowered dogs can be registered but cannot be shown since the breed standard specifies
Shar Pei must be solid colored.

- Horse Coat
- Short, flat, and prickly.
- Brush Coat
- Can be as long as 1 inch.
- Bear Coat
- Thick, dense coat. Looks like a bit like a Chow.

- Standard
- Weigh between 40-55lbs and stand 18-22 inches at the shoulder blade.
- Miniature
- Weigh between 30-40lbs and stand under 17 inches at the shoulder blade.
